Thanks to a generous donation from Rotary Club of Mendocino, California, the Rotary Club of Savusavu has successfully completed the first two phases of improvement works at the NaSavusavu Special School in Yaroi Village.
Established in 1991, NaSavusavu Special School is the only special school in the Cakaudrove District. It currently serves 35 students with disabilities including autism, hearing impairments, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual impairments, and specific learning difficulties. With six teachers, the school provides both academic instruction and vital life-skills and vocational training.
Phase 1: Playground Rebuild
The aging and unsafe playground equipment has been completely transformed. A rusted slide was replaced with a sturdy new structure, unsafe tyre installations were removed and replaced with a wooden see-saw, and new wood-shaving ground cover was installed for improved safety and drainage. Generous in-kind support was provided by a local sawmill.
Phase 2: Toilet Upgrades
Accessibility has been significantly improved. A widened doorway now allows wheelchair access, an internal wall was removed, and a solid handrail installed. Toilets for both students and staff were replaced, resolving leaks and improving hygiene.
The project was completed just before the school reopened after the Christmas break in late January 2026.
This partnership has made a meaningful difference in creating a safer, more inclusive learning environment for some of the region’s most vulnerable children.
