We believe that every child, and their mum, deserves the very best possible start in their life and so we made a commitment to provide everyone that needs it with a brand new, free, ‘Baby Box’.
Approximately 500 babies are born in this province every year, with the majority of them delivered in our one hospital in Savusavu. The hospital maternity staff tell us that many of these mothers have come by bus from many miles away and arrive with virtually nothing to care for their baby or themselves.
The Baby Box is be jam-packed full of all the essentials needed to help new parents welcome their bundle of joy into the world - along with a few little extra treats. The Baby Box includes:
· Reusable diapers, blankets, towels, baby clothes
· Health items such as a baby thermometer and cream for diaper rash.
· Cleaning supplies and essential newborn items
· Supplies for the new mother including breast pads and re-usable sanitary kits
· Information on breastfeeding, newborn care, contraception, and family planning
· Health and birth records from the Ministry of Health and NGO publications
· As if that wasn't enough, the box itself is a solid, colorful baby bath that can also be used for the baby’s bed in the early months.
All these items were chosen after working with the hospital and parents determining exactly what new parents would need in those early days. These kits are modeled on what is commonly done in many western countries to support new mothers.
Each kit costs around FJ$200 at retail .
Not all babies come on schedule and so not all new moms make it to the hospital. To include everyone, we have distributed kits to the four larger Community Health Centers around the province
